Basic Attention Currency, or BAT, is a token that powers a new blockchain-based digital advertising ecosystem that aims to reward consumers for their work and offer advertisers a higher return on ad spend.

How Does BAT Work? What’s The Difference?

First of all, the designers call BAT an experience. This experience is offered through Brave Browser, where users can see ads that protect their privacy and earn BAT in return. Advertisers can serve personalized ads to optimize engagement and reduce losses from ad fraud and abuse.

In this advertising ecosystem, the Basic Attention Token is the unit of reward and is transferred between advertisers, publishers, and users. Advertisers pay for advertising campaigns with BAT tokens. A small percentage of these funds is allocated to advertisers, while the remaining 70% goes to users, eliminating middlemen who traditionally raise advertising prices to increase profitability.

The Basic Attention token was launched in 2017 after one of the fastest Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) in history, raising $35 million in less than a minute. Since then, the company has made its expertise in attention-grabbing advertising available to customers in most countries through its Brave Rewards program. At the same time, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada are the countries with the most active advertising campaigns in November 2020.

Who Founded BAT Token?

Basic Attention Token was founded by Brendan Eich and Brian Bondy, two big names in the internet browser software industry. Brendan Eich is the CEO of Brave Software, Inc, the parent company of Brave Web Browser and Basic Attention Token. Prior to joining Brave, Eich was the founder and CTO of Mozilla and the inventor of JavaScript in 1995. In 2004, he helped develop Mozilla Firefox, one of the most popular web browsers in the world.

Brian Bondy joined Brave and Basic Attention Token as CTO. Bondy is an experienced programmer who has worked as a senior software engineer at Mozilla, a software developer at Corel Corporation, and as head of software development at Khan Academy. Eich and Bondy have nearly 50 years of software development experience.

There are sixteen team members on the BVT website, most with backgrounds in programming, engineering, or research.

How is BAT Different From Other Coin Systems?

Basic Attention Token is primarily used as a payment token for Brave Ads advertising campaigns. Beginning in November 2020, advertisers must commit to a minimum monthly spend of $2,500; however, a self-service platform with potentially lower limits is under development.

This advertising budget must be paid for exclusively with Basic Attention Tokens, which advertisers can obtain through a number of third-party exchange platforms. Brave receives a small commission, with the remainder passed on to publishers and users.

The Basic Attention Token and the Brave browser ecosystem offer the ability to reward (tip) people who are not yet members of the network, including websites and individual Twitter users. These users can then securely register on the site to receive their tips.

Basic Attention Token and Brave Browser have experienced high user adoption since their launch. As of October 2020, Brave Browser has a total of 20.5 million monthly active users, while Basic Attention Token is currently held by over 368,000 different wallets.
